Communing with Nature: Today’s Hottest (and Smartest) Office Trend

Most of us can agree that being outside, breathing fresh air and just being around greenery has an almost immediate effect on mood and our sense of well-being. It’s why we plan many of our vacations and recreation time around outdoor activities, take up gardening, keep houseplants, etc.

And maybe that’s where we got our wires crossed. As long as “workspaces” have existed, the presence of plants has been the exception, not the rule. Is it because we believed that nature would be a distraction? That a workspace is strictly for work, not for contentment or relaxation? It turns out we couldn’t have been more wrong.

Science weighs in . . .

During an 8-month Texas A&M University study, participants were asked to perform a series of tasks in three distinct office environments: a room with no decor, a room featuring abstract sculpture and a room adorned with flowers and plants.

Here’s what happened: “During the study, both women and men demonstrated more innovative thinking, generating more ideas and original solutions to problems in the office environment that included flowers and plants.”

In fact, men were able to generate 30% more ideas than they had in rooms without plants, while women’s ideas scored higher in the areas of creativity and flexibility. Lead researcher, Dr. Robert Ulrich, noted, “People’s productivity, in the form of innovation and creative problem solving, improved – which in certain circumstances could mean the difference between mild and great business success.”

And then there’s the University of Exeter study that found that a workspace that includes plantlife increased its subjects’ well-being by 47%, their creativity by 45% and their productivity by 38%.

Science has spoken: plants in the workplace aren’t merely a trend, they’re good business.
