How Are Plants Affecting Your Workplace Productivity?

In the great outdoors, most of us take the trees, flowers, shrubs, and even weeds for granted. For a moment try to imagine the world without plants, the prospect is depressing (not to mention the fact that we’d all be dead). Could you see yourself camping on the Bonneville Salt Flats? Or a leisurely stroll through the Sahara?

Realize it or not, we like being around plants. We go out of our way to create parks, take hikes, plant trees, and buy houseplants. We know that plants help us physically by producing oxygen, but there’s much more.

What Science Says

One Netherlands study that involved 345,143 people found that those who lived in areas with only 10% green space suffered from anxiety disorders at a rate of 2.6%, as opposed to the 1.8% for people living in 90% green space. Likewise, the 10% subjects had a 3.2% depression rate, while the 90% subjects’ rate was 2.4.

What about indoor plants? Psychology Today lists the results of several studies which found that plants in workplaces, schools, hospitals, etc., had the following effects on people:

  • Lower blood pressure (systolic)

  • Improved reaction times

  • Increased attentiveness

  • Improved attendance (at work and school)

  • Greater productivity (at work)

  • Improved well-being

  • Improved perceptions of the space

  • Lower levels of anxiety during recovery from surgery

  • Greater job satisfaction

According to Dr. Chris Knight of Exeter University, it’s just common sense: "If you put an ant into a 'lean' jam jar or a gorilla in a zoo into a 'lean' cage – they're miserable beasties.” And, of course, the same goes for people.

What if I don’t have the time or resources to take care of a bunch of plants, much less the room?

If you’ve got walls, you’ve got room. And, as far as maintenance, Sagegreenlife living walls practically take care of themselves. Connected to your existing plumbing, the wall waters itself through special “drip tubes” that ensure your plants get just the right amount.

Your plants will thrive in our patented, modular Biotiles™, which use a durable, layered basalt rock fiber to evenly distribute nutrients and water. Whether you design your own wall or have one of our Senior Horticulturists help you, your plants will arrive fully grown and ready to be installed. We customize our living walls to your specifications, they come in any size and can even wrap around surfaces or adhere to curved walls. Depending upon the scope of the project, it typically takes 8-10 weeks from design to delivery.

What if I don’t have the wall space or am not permitted to build anything into the wall?

Sagegreenlife also offers freestanding walls that range in size and function.

With a self-contained irrigation system, our Verdanta ™  walls require minimal effort, are portable and only need a standard electrical outlet to work. Additionally, our movable living partitions can be customized with plants on both sides or turned into a beautiful productivity tool by featuring the Sage Productivity Wall writing surface on one side.
